How is Writing Task 1(General Training) evaluated?

The Writing task 1 (Letter) is assessed based on the 4 factors as follows:

Task Achievement : In letter writing, the points that need to be discussed are given as bullet points. It is checked whether the candidate successfully elaborated them or not. So, to score well in this task, the candidate must take care of the following things:

  • The purpose of the letter should be mentioned clearly.
  • The tone should be appropriate for the receiver of the letter.
  • All the ideas given in bullet points should be elaborated well.
  • The main features of the letter should be clearly highlighted.
  • The tone of the letter should remain consistent throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion – The writer should have a clear flow of ideas in the letter, in order to increase the readability and understandability of the letter. The following points should be taken care of:

  • Divide the letter into logical paragraphs. For simplicity, make three paragraphs for the given three bullet points given in the letter question.
  • The first line of each paragraph should provide the information about the contents of the paragraph.
  • Include all important details, according to the intent of the paragraph.
  • Give a good conclusion to end each paragraph.
  • Use connectors (for example- and, so, although, hence etc.) to connect ideas logically.

Lexical Resource- This refers to the type of words/phrases used in the letter. The following points should be considered:

  • Use a variety of words relevant to the context of the letter.
  • Use some uncommon words effectively.
  • Recheck the letter for any spelling mistakes or incorrect word formations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy- This factor checks the knowledge of grammar and punctuation. So, take care of the following points:

  • Use a variety of sentence structures to exhibit your knowledge of grammar.
  • Maximize the usage of complex sentence by using connecting devices.
