The chart below shows the percentage of household owning and renting accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of households in rental and owned houses in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, it is apparent that over the years owning and renting witnessed a reverse trend, with a steep decline in rentals and sharp incline in ownership.

The proportion of people living in rented accommodation in 1918 stood at 75% compared to owned houses which was only 23%. In the following years, the renters showed a steady drop reaching to 68% in both 1939 and 1953. However at the same time, the percentage of ownership raised to 32%. Furthermore, the rentals continued to fall in the next decades before becoming even with ownership at 50% in 1971.

In 1981, the ownership rose remarkably and reached to 60%, and by 2001 it remained constant to about 68%. Whereas, the rentals decreased sharply to 31%. Finally in 2011, the percentage of households in leased accommodations saw a slight fall and was recorded as nearly double to that of ownership, accounting to 64% and 35% respectively.
